What is the difference between Denver mint, and Philadelphia mint?

I am collecting coins, and on the order form, it asks if I want Denver mint coins, or Philadelphia mint coins. What's the difference?

  1. You did not say what order form. Circulation struck coins are produced mostly at the Philadelphia and Denver mints. Some years Denver may make more of one denomination than Philly does, or could be the other way around. In order to say have a complete collection say of 2007 1/2 dollars, you need the P & D uncirculated coins, the S proof clad, the S proof silver and since 2005 the satin finish P & D from the mint sets. A lot of people do not know this and think by having the P & D state quarter they have a complete set, they do not they have a complete circulation strike set but far from complete.
  2. Location. People who are somewhat serious collectors want the same coin made in both mints. To the casual collector, it usually doesn't make any difference. Some of the collection and display books for the State Quarters have two slots for each coin. One's for a Denver-minted coin and the other's for a coin minted in Philadelphia. Other books, for the casual collector, have only one slot per state.
