Why don't academics become politicians or hold elected office?

It just seems logical to put the smartest, most ethical people, in the most impt positions. But there has only been one U.S. President to hold a Phd (Wilson). And academics rarely are elected to Congress. I wish we could mark none of the above on the ballot and begin a search for the most talented person, not the person with the deepest pockets or best fundraising ability.

1. most politicians are crooks and liars who only work for their self interest and you dont need any educational qualification to be a politicians or even president all you need to be is a US citizen and over 35 thats all
2. They are too smart to want the job. FYI: Bill Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar and Hillary was Valedictorian of her Ivy League college. Not too shabby. Geoge W, was a c student that prob. got into Yale because of his Daddy.

4. Probably because its more rewarding to be on a one on one basis with someone and hopefully influence their lives first hand. Besides, politics isn't about being book-smart.

6. If you're smart, it's a much better idea to be an activist. You can afford to keep your ideals, and if you're persistent, making a politician's life hell is its own reward.
7. Well we have that chance now. Obama held a university faculty position for years.
