What is the difference between payroll software and a payroll service?

Im a business studies student and wondered whether the only difference is that a payroll service is internet-based? Or is there more to it? Is this the case for all payroll services? Any advantages and disadvantages of each type of payroll managing method would be very helpful. Thank you.

1. Payroll software - you install the software and you do the input. Payroll service - you submit invoices, the service does the billing and accounting. Some doctors use a service, some hire their own staff to do accounting on the spot. A matter of choice, weighing hiring and firing, providing office space and equipment, as opposed to letting a service do the work. Cost effectiveness also has to be taken into account.
