Consumers across the United States have faced limited choices in commercial health insurance markets over the past decade, according to a new report released by the American Medical Association (AMA). The findings highlight ongoing challenges related to competition and consumer options within the industry.
“Competition in commercial health insurance markets remains worryingly low,” said an AMA spokesperson. “For more than a decade, millions of Americans have lived in regions where one or two insurers dominate.”
The report examines market concentration trends and their impact on both patients and providers. According to the AMA, many areas continue to be served by only a small number of insurance carriers, limiting competition and potentially affecting pricing and coverage options for consumers.
“Without robust competition, patients may pay higher premiums while receiving fewer benefits,” added the spokesperson. “This situation also affects physicians’ ability to negotiate fair contracts with insurers.”
The full report is available for those seeking detailed data on state-by-state market conditions and insurer dominance.
