Black Hills Energy has announced its annual giving campaign will focus on supporting volunteer fire departments through its Funds for Firefighters grant program. The initiative, managed by the Black Hills Corporation Foundation, aims to assist volunteer firefighters who often respond first in emergencies while balancing other jobs and family commitments.
This year’s campaign provided more than $135,000 in grants to fire departments across Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The funds were used for a range of equipment purchases such as protective gear—including coats, boots, helmets—specialized tools like hydraulic rescue tools and high-pressure air lifting bags, as well as infrastructure improvements and essential items including radios and lighting equipment.
Since 2001, the Black Hills Corporation Foundation has contributed over $8.3 million to more than 500 organizations within the eight states where it operates. Its giving efforts are organized around three main pillars: thriving communities, conservation, and future leaders.
Small towns often depend on volunteer firefighters not only for firefighting but also for medical emergencies and public education on safety. Many volunteers serve as EMTs or lead community outreach programs such as child car seat checks.
More than 250 employees at Black Hills Energy also serve as volunteer firefighters in their communities.
“Safety starts with people — and the courage to serve. Our volunteer firefighters embody that spirit every day, and we’re proud to stand beside them. At Black Hills Energy, we believe that when we invest in those who protect our communities, we’re building a stronger, safer future for everyone,” the company stated.
“We’re honored to give back to the volunteer firefighters in our communities. Together, we’re building safer, stronger and more resilient communities,” according to Black Hills Energy.
