The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has announced that it will permanently close the I-25 East Frontage Road access to Weld County Road 34 in Mead on Monday, January 5, at 5 a.m. The closure is necessary for crews to extend the North Creek Box Culvert as part of the ongoing I-25 North Express Lanes project.
According to CDOT, this move is being coordinated with the Town of Mead and Weld County, who are constructing a two-mile section of High Plains Boulevard between Weld County Road 32 and Weld County Road 36. When completed—currently projected for summer 2026—traffic that previously used the frontage road will be rerouted onto High Plains Boulevard. The frontage road will then be limited to private property and utility access only.
Local motorists will still be able to reach their properties between WCR 34 and WCR 36 or between WCR 34 and WCR 32, but through traffic will not be permitted in either direction.
Starting in late January, construction crews plan to reduce the asphalt roadway width on certain sections of the frontage road from Mulligan Street (northeast quadrant of Colorado Highway 66 and I-25) to Colorado Highway 56. This work prepares for both northbound lane widening on I-25 and changes to local roadway access.
During construction, the frontage road south of WCR 32 will also close so crews can finish widening I-25 and complete drainage improvements. Detour routes and speed limit reductions will be posted throughout the area. CDOT advises drivers to use caution while traveling through work zones and areas with reduced roadway width.

Construction schedules are weather-dependent and may change without notice.
