The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will start a new technology project on September 29, which includes the installation of fiber optic cable along Colorado Highway 66 and the deployment of traffic cameras on US Highway 36 between Lyons and Estes Park.
Dillie and Kuhn, the contractor for the project, will begin by installing fiber optic cable from I-25 to Lyons. This infrastructure will support the operation of new traffic cameras on US 36. In addition to supporting CDOT’s traffic management systems, the fiber optic line is expected to expand internet access for local communities and improve communication capabilities for emergency services.
During the installation phase, drivers should anticipate shoulder closures along the route. After completion of this segment, work crews will move operations to US 36 where they will set up traffic cameras.
“CDOT cameras help get first responders to the scene faster since they are monitored by our Operation Centers 24 hours a day. The cameras also assist the public and our plows to understand road conditions before going out. Having the cameras along US 36 will be greatly beneficial as the canyon corridor has experienced flood, fire, strong winds and heavy snow over the years,” said CDOT Regional Transportation Director Heather Paddock.
Members of the public can view live feeds from these cameras through CDOT’s COtrip.org website or its mobile application.
