The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on Apr. 28 that it will start construction on Interstate 25 at Exit 14 in Trinidad, beginning May 4 and continuing through the end of September. The project aims to improve safety by realigning the southbound off-ramp into a straighter path and replacing asphalt with concrete paving.
The changes are designed to make driving conditions safer, especially for larger trucks that currently face challenges due to a sharp curve at the exit. According to Region 2 Transportation Director Shane Ferguson, “This realignment, in combination with a new concrete road surface, will provide a smoother road surface and route when exiting the I-25, enhancing the safety of the traveling public.”
Construction will be completed in two phases. The first phase is expected to have minimal impact on traffic as work occurs off-road. During the second phase later this summer, there will be a two-week closure of the southbound off-ramp at Exit 14, with traffic detoured via Exit 13.
Work hours are scheduled from Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and San Pedro Street will be closed from Colorado Avenue (Exit 14 offramp) to Commercial Street until August. In August, drivers heading southbound on I-25 should expect closure of Exit 14 with detours using Exit 13 for access into Trinidad.
According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation works to improve quality of life for residents through integrated transportation solutions while delivering an effective multi-modal system that safely moves people and goods across Colorado. The department oversees statewide transportation infrastructure including interstates and highways, administers grants for aviation and transit projects, and operates within highway maintenance as well as support for other transit sectors.
Shoshana Lew serves as executive director according to information available on their official website.
