The U.S. Census Bureau will begin an embargo for the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates on September 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The public release of these estimates is scheduled for September 11.
The ACS collects and provides statistics about various aspects of the nation’s population and housing, including language spoken at home, education, commuting patterns, employment status, mortgage status and rent, income levels, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. It remains the only source of local data for most of its more than 40 topics.
According to the Census Bureau, “The one-year statistics will be available to embargo subscribers beginning Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. ET for all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, all congressional districts and metropolitan statistical areas, and other geographic areas with populations of 65,000 or more.”
Embargo subscribers will have access to these statistics from Tuesday morning until just after midnight on Thursday. The Census Bureau emphasized that “Wire and distribution services are prohibited from distributing embargoed news stories and data files before the public release date and time.” For further details about the rules regarding embargoed information, individuals can refer to the Census Bureau’s embargo policy.
All related data products—including those on data.census.gov, through the API, in summary files, and via other tools—will become publicly accessible by 10 a.m. Eastern Time on September 11.
