The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Castle Rock Construction are set to begin a pavement overlay and infrastructure improvement project on Colorado Highway 71 in late July. The project area is located just south of Colorado Highway 14, north of Snyder and Brush, covering approximately four miles.
According to CDOT, the work will include milling the existing asphalt and applying new concrete pavement. These upgrades aim to improve roadway safety, durability, and driving conditions while extending the life of the highway. Additional enhancements will involve culvert extensions for water protection, installation of a solar-powered warning beacon, and rumble strips to alert drivers.
“This area gets hit with a lot of water over-topping the road,” said Heather Paddock, CDOT Northeast Colorado Transportation Director. “The water takes a toll on the road and is a hazard for drivers. This project will give new life to the road and give drivers warning when the high water comes.”
Work is scheduled Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., but timing may change due to weather conditions. Initial impacts include shoulder closures in both directions between County Road 78 and CO 14 for slope grading and embankment activities. In early August, a full closure of CO 71 between CO 14 and I-76 is expected as crews prepare for pavement overlay; traffic will be detoured at I-76 with local access maintained.
Motorists are advised to observe posted speed limits throughout the construction zone. For up-to-date information on road conditions during this period, travelers can visit https://www.cotrip.org.
The improvements are intended to keep this section of highway in good condition for years ahead while enhancing travel safety.
