The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on Mar. 27 that it will begin the Interstate 70 Seibert–Stratton Roadway Improvements project in early April, working with Harper Brothers Construction. The project will take place on I-70 east and west of Seibert, from Mile Points 401 to 407, and along Colorado Highway 57 (Colorado Avenue) in Stratton between I-70 and US Highway 24.

This project aims to improve safety and extend the life of key roadways and bridges for drivers traveling through Kit Carson County. The department expects work to be completed by October 2027, with a planned winter shutdown between October 2026 and April 2027.

Initial work will focus on constructing crossover detours east and west of Seibert to allow head-to-head traffic while protecting construction crews. Planned improvements include replacing deteriorated concrete pavement, bridge rehabilitation, installing a new concrete overlay, upgrading guardrails, adding new delineators, updating roadway signage, and applying fresh pavement striping for better visibility.

Bridge rehabilitation involves removing the existing deck surface and resurfacing it with new concrete. Crews will also replace joints and make structural repairs beneath the bridge deck to improve ride quality and reduce future maintenance needs. In addition to I-70 upgrades, CO 57 between the I-70 interchange and US Highway 24 within Stratton will be milled and paved with hot-mix asphalt for a smoother driving surface. Select curb sections will be reconstructed; signage updated; striping refreshed; ramps at both interchanges resurfaced—requiring occasional closures or traffic shifts during paving operations.

Daytime work hours are scheduled Monday through Friday from half an hour before sunrise until half an hour after sunset. Weekend work may occur as needed depending on weather or other unforeseen delays.

According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation oversees transportation infrastructure across Colorado including building highways as well as administering grants for aviation or transit projects. Shoshana Lew serves as executive director according to information provided by the department. The agency works toward integrated solutions that enhance quality of life statewide while supporting multi-modal transportation systems focused on safety according to its mission statement.
