The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on Mar. 23 that it will start a resurfacing project along US Highway 50 from the Pueblo-Fremont County Line to Purcell Boulevard in Pueblo West beginning April 6. The work will take place during both daytime and nighttime hours and is expected to improve about 13 miles of roadway.
The project is important for commuters, freight transport, and residents who rely on this key east-west corridor. Improvements include milling old asphalt, paving with new asphalt, bridge repairs, and replacing guardrails.
“US 50 is a vital east-west corridor for commuters, freight and residents,” said Region 2 Transportation Director Shane Ferguson. “The new asphalt will add approximately 10 years of life to the highway and provide a smoother road surface for motorists.”
Additional safety upgrades involve installing new guardrails that are now required to be higher at 31 inches. This change is designed so vehicles are less likely to leave the roadway in case of an accident.
According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation works to improve quality of life through integrated transportation solutions across the state. The agency aims to deliver an effective multi-modal system that safely transports people, goods, and information while meeting environmental standards according to its official website. Shoshana Lew serves as executive director for the department as indicated by its official website.
As outlined on its official website, CDOT oversees transportation infrastructure throughout Colorado including interstates, U.S. highways, state highways, aviation grants, and transit support.
