The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and contractor Structures Inc. are set to begin rehabilitation work on four Interstate 225 bridges in Aurora starting Sunday night, August 10. The project will address the elevated slope found in the middle sections of both northbound and southbound I-225 bridges over 2nd and 6th avenues by applying asphalt between the bridge centers and their approaches, aiming to flatten the driving surface.
In addition to lane leveling, CDOT plans to replace existing bridge expansion joints with plug joints, install a waterproof overlay, replace several concrete panels north of 6th Avenue, and conduct a strategic mill and overlay. The overlay process will use gradually decreasing depths of asphalt from the center of each bridge toward its approaches to achieve an even roadway surface.
The scheduled construction will require overnight single and double lane closures in both directions on I-225 from just north of 6th Avenue (Mile Point 9.5) to just south of Alameda Avenue (Mile Point 7.5). These closures will occur Sunday through Thursday nights for approximately three months.
Work is planned in one direction at a time. Single lane closures will start at 7 p.m., followed by double lane closures at 10 p.m., with all lanes reopening by 5 a.m. the next day. For the week beginning August 10, northbound I-225 will be affected on Sunday and Monday nights; southbound lanes will close Tuesday and Wednesday nights; Thursday night work returns to northbound I-225.
