Crews working for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Hamon Infrastructure have finished installing 3.5 miles of new noise walls along Interstate 70 between Pecos Street and I-76. This work marks the completion of the second phase in a project to replace aging timber noise barriers with concrete panels. The first phase, completed in 2022, replaced one mile of noise walls between Tennyson Street and Lowell Boulevard.
The second phase began in March 2024 and involved removing deteriorating timber structures on both sides of I-70. The project also included upgrades to guardrails, concrete barriers, regrading, and landscaping improvements along the interstate. Although completion was expected by fall 2026, crews finished nearly a year ahead of schedule.
Jessica Myklebust, Regional Transportation Director for Region 1, stated: “Delivering this project phase ahead of schedule reflects the hard work and efficiency of our teams. For the communities along this I-70 corridor, these new concrete walls mean relief from noise pollution and the confidence of a more stable safety barrier. We are proud to deliver this key improvement to residents of our region.”
While major construction is complete, CDOT noted that final clean-up will continue through December. Landscaping work is scheduled for spring 2026 but is not expected to significantly affect traffic.
The new concrete noise walls are designed to reduce traffic-related noise for residents and businesses near I-70 while improving the appearance of the highway area. Concrete panels offer greater durability than timber structures and are expected to provide long-term noise mitigation.
