Denver Health has become the first hospital in the Rocky Mountain region to receive Emergency General Surgery (EGS) verification from the American College of Surgeons, according to a March 11 announcement. The recognition follows a two-day, on-site review and places Denver Health among only 13 hospitals nationwide that meet the highest standards for urgent and life-threatening general surgical care.

The EGS verification is important because it identifies hospitals equipped to handle some of the most complex and time-sensitive surgical emergencies. These include conditions such as bowel obstruction, complex biliary disease, perforated esophagus and peptic ulcer disease, fistulas, soft tissue infections, acute gastrointestinal bleeding, and other cases requiring immediate intervention.

The American College of Surgeons’ Emergency General Surgery Verification Program evaluates hospitals against 43 standards across nine domains. These include assessments of surgical response times, clinical care pathways, quality improvement infrastructure, data surveillance systems, geriatric protocols, and multidisciplinary team coordination.

“This verification represents our collective commitment to the patients who count on us most,” said Fredric M. Pieracci, MD, MPH, Chair of Surgery at Denver Health. “EGS, like so many other health conditions, is strongly related to social determinants of health, and having the resources and expertise to rapidly identify and treat EGS conditions leads to better outcomes. I am proud that Denver Health has been recognized as the lone center in the region that provides this rigorous level of care.  EGS verification showcases our team based, multidisciplinary approach to providing comprehensive care to our patients; this culture of collegiality is a hallmark of what makes Denver Health Denver’s most trusted provider.”

The new status will affect emergency medical services routing decisions as well as interfacility transfers throughout Colorado and neighboring states. Ambulance systems and regional hospitals can now direct patients needing advanced emergency surgical care specifically to Denver Health.

Denver Health’s EGS verification remains valid through May 2028. The hospital will undergo another review at that time for reverification.
