The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Myers and Sons Construction have started a drainage improvement project along a one-mile section of Interstate 70 near Exit 285 toward Airport Boulevard in Adams County. The project aims to manage stormwater more effectively and increase highway safety, with completion expected by mid-December.
Crews are cleaning out existing pipes and drains, upgrading drainage structures, and installing new trench drains as well as a channel filtration system. These efforts are intended to improve water flow efficiency and reduce the risk of flooding. The work also involves removing accumulated debris, protecting inlets, and connecting new concrete pipes to the current drainage network.
Other aspects of the project include the installation of new guardrails, signage, striping, and barriers. According to CDOT, these improvements will help prevent hydroplaning and ice formation while enhancing driver visibility. They are also expected to extend the lifespan of the roadway by protecting pavement from water damage.
Overnight closures are planned for the I-70 off-ramp to Airport Boulevard on Monday, Nov. 3, and tentatively Tuesday, Nov. 4, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., so crews can safely set up barriers. During this period, there will be an eastbound right lane closure on I-70 near Mile Point 284.
Drivers traveling eastbound on I-70 who need access to Airport Boulevard should use Exit 283 toward Chambers Road as an alternative route: “Turn left onto Chambers Road and continue straight. Turn left onto East 32nd Avenue and continue straight to reach Airport Boulevard. Turn right to head south on Airport Boulevard or left to head north.”
