The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and its contractor KSK, LLC will pause work on the I-70 Glenwood Canyon Bridge Joint Improvement Project for the winter starting Wednesday, November 26.
During the 2025 construction season, crews completed five bridge joints in both eastbound and westbound directions near Exit 129 at Bair Ranch Rest Area. They also finished one larger bridge-joint structure at Exit 123 near the Shoshone Power Plant. These upgrades are designed to allow for roadway expansion and contraction while providing a smoother driving surface.
“The team has made great progress on this section of this critical I-70 Mountain Corridor project ahead of winter,” said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. “Maintaining the health and safety of I-70 through Glenwood Canyon is essential not only for travelers, but for Colorado’s economic vitality. This corridor is a backbone for commerce and tourism, and keeping it safe and reliable is fundamental to supporting communities and businesses across the state.”
To transition into the winter shutdown safely, several steps have been taken. Both directions of I-70 will return to standard configuration with two lanes open each way. No scheduled lane closures are planned during winter to avoid disrupting travel or snow removal operations; motorists should expect typical lane and shoulder widths throughout the season. All replaced bridge joint surfaces have been paved, and no further construction activities—other than necessary maintenance—will occur until spring.
CDOT has introduced an online hub focused on the I-70 Mountain Corridor at codot.gov/i70mountain. The site offers information about winter driving conditions, road updates, and travel tips by consolidating resources from COtrip.org and the COtrip Planner app.
Work will resume in spring 2026 with plans to replace 18 additional bridge joints, complete guardrail improvements, and perform asphalt paving from Mile Point 116 near Glenwood Springs to Mile Point 133 in Dotsero. The remaining bridge joint work is scheduled at or near Exit 119 (No Name), Exit 122 (Grizzly Creek Rest Area), and Exit 125 (Hanging Lake Trailhead).
Bridge joints connect roadways to elevated structures, allowing them to expand or contract as vehicles pass—a function considered vital for roadway safety.
