The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on March 30 that a resurfacing project along Interstate 70 from near Gypsum (Mile Point 139) to Eagle (Exit 147) will begin on April 6, with completion expected in fall 2026.

The project covers about eight miles of I-70 and aims to improve road conditions for local communities, freight, and tourism in the mountain corridor. The work includes milling old asphalt, paving with new asphalt, replacing guardrails, repairing bridge decks, updating road signs and striping, as well as widening the westbound off-ramp at Eagle.

“The I-70 Mountain Corridor serves as a critical gateway to the Eagle River Valley providing vital access for local communities, freight and tourism throughout Colorado’s mountain corridor,” said Jason Smith, Regional Transportation Director. “Protecting this asset with a new road surface will add approximately 10 years of life to the interstate and provide a smoother driving experience for motorists.”

New guardrails meeting updated safety standards will be installed during the project. These improvements are intended to help vehicles remain on the roadway if they veer off course. CDOT has also launched an online resource page offering year-round information about driving conditions and safety tips along I-70.

Work hours are scheduled Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 7 a.m. to noon for daytime shifts; nighttime work runs Sunday night through Friday morning from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Traffic impacts include single-lane closures, an eleven-foot width restriction, reduced speed limits of fifty-five miles per hour, and minimal delays.

According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation works on improving quality of life through integrated transportation solutions across Colorado’s infrastructure network. The department is led by executive director Shoshana Lew according to its official website. CDOT builds and maintains interstates such as I-70 while supporting aviation and transit initiatives statewide as outlined on its official site.
