Representatives from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) gathered recently at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center to prepare for upcoming contract negotiations with GE Appliances. The Joint Bargaining Committee (JBC), which also includes members from UA and UE, represents unionized service technicians who operate out of service vans nationwide.

The negotiation preparation program lasted several days and included strategic training, research analysis, and coordinated bargaining exercises among multiple unions. The goal was to ensure that JBC unions approach negotiations as a unified group, equipped with information needed to secure favorable contracts for their members.

Participants reviewed contract language, developed proposals, worked on costing exercises, and planned communications strategies. There was a strong focus on engaging union members so that their concerns are represented at the bargaining table.

Committees collaborated across local unions to identify shared challenges and exchange best practices. Key issues included protecting wages and benefits, strengthening job security, and improving workplace protections. The committees aimed to develop coordinated strategies to address these priorities for JBC families.

“This training gives our negotiating committees the tools and confidence they need to fight for the best possible agreement,” said IAM Union Collective Bargaining Director Craig Norman. “Preparation is power, and when we walk into negotiations, we do so with a clear strategy and the full strength of our membership behind us.”
