Members of IAM District 776 joined together on March 24 to provide food and resources to unhoused individuals in the Fort Worth community, continuing an annual tradition now in its third year. The event, known as the District 776 Homeless Drive, saw participation from union members and drew support from Texas State Senator Taylor Rehmet, who is also a member of the district.
The effort aims to address critical needs among vulnerable populations by bringing together union members for charitable work. Organizers say that while contract negotiations are approaching for many members, their commitment to supporting the local community remains strong.
Eric Meriwether, Business Representative for District 776, shared inspiration drawn from former President Paul Black. “Our retired President Paul Black shared something with me during his retirement party that I carry with me always: Never forget where you come from,” said Meriwether. “I’ve always lived by that, and it guides everything I do for our members and our community.”
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) has a longstanding history of involvement in community service both inside and outside the workplace. However, organizers emphasize that it is at the local level where these relationships are maintained during times of need.
To mark another successful event this year, participants celebrated with classic Texas barbecue and looked ahead to hosting another drive next year.
