IAM members from various industries gathered at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center for a weeklong Young Workers Program, which focused on developing future union leaders. The program was organized by Dee Colbert, IAM Women’s and Young Workers Director.

“This initiative is designed to engage and empower the next generation of union members by providing them with exposure to a wide range of departments, leaders, and opportunities within our movement,” said Colbert. “It is imperative that we give young workers meaningful experiences that deepen their understanding of union values and help shape their leadership mindset as they prepare for long, successful careers in the labor movement.”

The participants engaged in training sessions covering topics such as IAM history, strategic planning, parliamentary procedure, generational diversity, public speaking, organizing on issues, economics related to unions, human rights, and committee building. These sessions were led by experienced educators and staff from IAM.

During the program, attendees were divided into groups to develop plans for starting Young Worker Committees in their local unions. One group presented their project as a podcast to demonstrate how digital media can be used to reach younger audiences.

The IAM Communications Department provided training on effective messaging and communication strategies to help participants support committee-building efforts when they return home.

Senior IAM officials including General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes, Special Assistant Bryan Pinette, and Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen addressed the group. They shared their personal experiences in the union and encouraged young members to take active roles within the organization.
