L.A. Insurance has announced that car insurance costs in Colorado are elevated due to several factors, including repair expenses, uninsured drivers, severe weather conditions, and market pressures that increase risks for insurers and subsequently raise premiums.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), steady population growth and increasing vehicle density have heightened crash exposure in both urban and rural areas. The agency highlights that the state’s combination of mountain passes, rural highways, and congested metro corridors creates diverse high-risk driving conditions contributing to higher insurance costs. CDOT also cites rapid in-migration as a factor straining roadways and elevating crash frequency statewide.
Bankrate’s 2024 auto insurance study indicates that full-coverage premiums in Colorado average approximately $3,000 per year—more than 25% above the national average. The report attributes this discrepancy to rising repair costs, higher claim severity, and increased medical and labor expenses. Bankrate also notes that minimum-coverage policies in Colorado average around $664 annually, suggesting widespread cost pressures across the market.
The Insurance Information Institute reports that 17.5% of Colorado drivers are uninsured, significantly surpassing the national rate of about 13%. This situation imposes additional costs on insured motorists. The institute explains that states with high uninsured-driver populations typically experience higher premiums due to expanded uninsured motorist payouts. Their analysis identifies this risk as a major contributor to premium increases in fault-based insurance states like Colorado.
