There will be lane closures on South Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs from Monday, December 1 through Friday, December 5. The closures will occur between Venetucci Boulevard and Milton Proby Parkway from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day to allow crews to install signage and complete roadway, traffic signal lighting, and utility work. Two lanes of traffic will remain open in both directions during this period. Drivers are advised to follow posted speed limits, keep safe distances, and watch for workers and equipment.

The ongoing South Academy Boulevard Widening Project is focused on expanding a 1.5-mile section of the road from two lanes to three in each direction to help reduce congestion. This section runs from the I-25 interchange, crosses US 85/87, and continues toward Milton E. Proby Parkway. The project also includes improvements such as better drainage facilities, lighting, striping, wider shoulders, modified merge lanes, sound walls, and bridgework. El Paso County manages the project with completion expected by early 2026.

A safety assessment conducted by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) identified safety problems along the corridor and analyzed crash causes. The planned improvements are intended to reduce crashes and address infrastructure deficiencies over the next two decades.

The Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Program (MAMSIP), which includes this project among others along I-25, Colorado Highway 94, South Academy Boulevard, and Charter Oak Ranch Road, aims to improve mobility and safety while supporting economic stability in the region. The program is partially funded by an $18 million BUILD grant from the US Department of Transportation. These upgrades are designed to enhance transportation connections between key military installations in El Paso County: Fort Carson, Peterson Space Force Base, Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station, and Schriever Space Force Base.
