Lupita Ruybal, a paraprofessional in the South Conejos School District, has been recognized for her dedication to education and advocacy as a member of the Antonito Classroom Teacher Association (ACTA). With 15 years of experience as a paraprofessional and 13 years as an association member, Ruybal currently serves as the building representative for her local union.
“Our union was the first in the state of Colorado to adopt a Master contract…I joined the union to be an advocate for education and to have a voice for the greater good of all,” Ruybal said. She credits her union as being a strong support system and emphasizes that achievements are shared among all members.
Working in a district with only about 1,000 people, Ruybal prioritizes building relationships within her school community. “I am so proud to be a part of our school community. I would like to give a shout out to my students, and all the great people I work with on a daily basis. I couldn’t do what I love without their support,” she said. As building representative, she remains engaged with current members while also focusing on recruiting new ones. “I’m a people person, I love meeting new people. I make it a point to greet everybody, so everyone ends up knowing who I am.”
Ruybal recently received her UniServ’s Blue Ribbon Apple Support Award through a nomination process. She described receiving this award as an important milestone in her career.
“We need to keep working together no matter what happens. We are stronger together,” she stated.
Born and raised in Antonito and herself an alumna of South Conejos School District, Ruybal holds a Bachelor of Science degree. Her interest in teaching began after several substitute assignments. She values daily engagement with students both inside and outside the classroom. “What makes me come to work everyday is my students. One of my hobbies includes attending as many activities of the students’ events as possible. I love supporting the students.”
When not involved with student activities or events, Ruybal spends time with her family.
