Starting in January 2025, Medicare beneficiaries will have access to a new payment option called the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan. This initiative is part of the Inflation Reduction Act and aims to help individuals manage their out-of-pocket costs for prescription drugs by allowing them to spread these payments throughout the calendar year, rather than paying all at once at the pharmacy.

According to information about the program, participation is voluntary and is designed for certain people who may benefit from managing their drug expenses over time. The plan does not reduce overall costs but provides a way to make existing payments more manageable.

“There’s no cost to participate in the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan. If this payment option is selected, each month the plan premium will continue to be paid, if they have one. The patient will receive a bill from the health or drug plan to pay, instead of paying the pharmacy.”

Patients interested in enrolling are encouraged to contact their health or drug plan directly for more details on how to sign up.
