The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on Apr. 1 that a safety improvement project will start along Colorado Highway 12 west of Weston in mid-April, with motorists advised to expect up to 15-minute delays.
The project aims to enhance safety and traffic flow between Mile Point 46.7 and Mile Point 48. Planned work includes widening the highway by sixteen feet, full-depth reclamation and reconstruction, four-foot shoulder expansion, and the addition of a twelve-foot eastbound passing lane. Crews will also repair culverts and update pavement markings and signage.
“The Highway of Legends is a scenic and historic route known for its views, history and outdoor experiences between Trinidad and La Veta,” said Region 2 Transportation Director Shane Ferguson. “Construction of passing lanes will provide ample space and opportunities for vehicles to safely pass slower moving traffic.”
Work is scheduled from Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., with one-lane alternating traffic managed by flaggers during the day, while nighttime hours will be controlled by portable signals. A twelve-foot width restriction will be in place throughout construction, which is expected to conclude in September.
According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation works to improve quality of life for residents through integrated transportation solutions across highways, aviation, and transit systems statewide. The department builds and maintains interstates as well as state highways while overseeing grants for other modes of transport according to its official site. Shoshana Lew serves as executive director according to agency information.
Broader implications include improved durability for this stretch of road due to new asphalt paving techniques designed for longevity against ruts or damage—a goal consistent with CDOT’s focus on effective multi-modal systems that enhance safety while meeting environmental standards as outlined by CDOT.
