Lane closures are scheduled on South Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs from Monday, December 8 through Friday, December 12, between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The closures will occur between Venetucci Boulevard and Milton Proby Parkway to allow for the installation of signage and the completion of roadway, traffic signal, and lighting work. Two lanes of traffic will remain open in both directions during this period. Drivers are advised to follow posted speed limits, maintain safe distances, and stay alert for crews and equipment.

The ongoing South Academy Boulevard Widening Project covers about 1.5 miles from the I-25 interchange across US 85/87 to Milton E. Proby Parkway. This project aims to widen the road from two lanes to three in each direction to reduce congestion. Additional improvements include upgraded drainage systems, lighting, striping, expanded shoulders, modified merge lanes, sound walls, and bridgework. The project is managed by El Paso County and is expected to finish by early 2026.

A safety assessment conducted by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) identified safety issues along the corridor and analyzed crash causes. According to CDOT, “These transportation improvements are mitigation measures to reduce crashes, improve infrastructure, and address physical deficiencies that contribute to crashes in the corridor.” Over a twenty-year period, these changes are projected to lower deaths, injuries, and crashes across four Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Program (MAMSIP) corridors.

The MAMSIP initiative seeks to enhance mobility along I-25, Colorado Highway 94, South Academy Boulevard, and Charter Oak Ranch Road with support from an $18 million BUILD grant awarded by the US Department of Transportation. The program is designed to strengthen strategic transportation links among military installations in El Paso County such as Fort Carson, Peterson Space Force Base, Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station, and Schriever Space Force Base.
