Taylor Rehmet, a long-time leader in the International Association of Machinists (IAM) union and a military veteran, has become the first rank-and-file union member to be sworn into the Texas State Senate. His inauguration was marked as a significant moment for labor advocates.

Rehmet has held several leadership positions within his union before taking public office. He described his move to the legislature as a continuation of his advocacy for workers’ rights. “He explicitly pledges to address critical issues such as stagnant wages, retirement security and public education.”

The event drew attention from labor organizations across Texas, highlighting the growing influence of union members in state politics.

Rehmet’s priorities include tackling wage stagnation, ensuring secure retirements for workers, and improving public education—issues he says are central to both his legislative agenda and his background in labor leadership.
