Uber announced that its platform includes real-time tracking, in-app emergency buttons, driver screenings, and other safety features designed to enhance protection for riders and drivers in Colorado.
According to Uber, the safety features include multi-step driver screenings that check for impaired driving and violent offenses, annual background checks, GPS tracking for all rides, an in-app Emergency Button to connect with 911, RideCheck to detect if trips go off-course or crashes occur, audio recording options during trips, and 24/7 incident support through partnerships like ADT. These tools aim to provide proactive monitoring and immediate assistance while maintaining privacy protections such as anonymized phone numbers and addresses. The company also employs two-way ratings and community guidelines to uphold standards.
Colorado Politics reported that Uber maintains high safety standards in the state. It noted that 99.9998 percent of trips nationwide end without serious incidents and highlighted a 44 percent reduction in sexual assault rates since data publication began. Governor Jared Polis vetoed House Bill 1291, which sought additional regulations for rideshare operations. This decision was made to avoid jeopardizing services that already incorporate effective safety features, thus preserving access to reliable transportation amid affordability concerns.
Data from Richman Law indicates that Uber’s fatality rate stands at 0.87 deaths per 100 million miles traveled during 2021-2022, which is below the national average. Additionally, the platform contributed to a 5.2 percent reduction in overall traffic fatalities nationwide, saving an estimated 627 lives in one year. Studies suggest that Uber’s presence reduces alcohol-related crashes and enhances road safety in metropolitan areas.
Founded in 2009, Uber offers ridesharing services along with food delivery via Uber Eats, freight booking, and employee travel solutions globally. The company focuses on safety through technology and collaborations across numerous countries.
