Uber has announced enhancements to its safety measures, including improved driver screenings, in-app emergency features, and technology to detect unusual trips. This initiative aims to bolster the protection of both riders and drivers, as said in a recent news release.

According to Reuters, this announcement follows years of incremental improvements by Uber aimed at enhancing its global safety reputation after facing industry scrutiny. The company’s strategy now incorporates technology-based prevention systems, partnerships with law enforcement, and enhanced privacy protocols to ensure the well-being of users. This press release represents Uber’s most comprehensive safety update for 2025, focusing on transparency, accountability, and user confidence.

Uber’s official newsroom release states that all drivers must undergo a multi-step background screening before their first trip. This process includes checks for impaired driving and violent offenses. Additionally, annual rescreenings are mandated alongside continuous monitoring technology designed to detect potential issues between rides. These protocols were developed in collaboration with national background check providers to maintain consistent safety standards and align with evolving regulatory expectations.

TechCrunch reports that Uber’s RideCheck feature utilizes GPS data and smartphone sensors to identify possible collisions or route deviations that could indicate an emergency. Upon detecting an anomaly, Uber’s safety team is notified automatically, while both the driver and rider receive an in-app prompt offering assistance or emergency contact options. In 2025, Uber expanded this technology to hundreds of new U.S. cities and improved its integration with local 911 systems, allowing location data transmission directly to emergency responders in select areas.

Uber Technologies Inc., founded in 2009, is a global mobility and logistics platform connecting millions of riders and drivers across over 10,000 cities worldwide. The company offers services in mobility, delivery, and freight while prioritizing safety through innovation supported by real-time monitoring tools, insurance coverage, and a 24/7 safety support team.
