The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on April 3 that a resurfacing project will start Monday, April 6, along a 14-mile stretch of US Highway 40 through Milner. The work will extend from the Xcel Energy Hayden station at Mile Point 112 to about five miles west of Steamboat Springs at MP 126 and is expected to continue until mid-November.
The project aims to improve driving conditions and safety for commuters traveling between Craig and Steamboat Springs. Additional improvements include guardrail replacement, minor enhancements and safety upgrades on three bridges, as well as slope stabilization in Mt. Harris Canyon—a location known for rockfall challenges.
United Companies of Grand Junction has been selected as the contractor for this $12 million initiative. Work hours are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, with paving operations moving to nighttime hours—7 p.m. to 6 a.m.—starting mid-May. During construction, traffic will be reduced intermittently to one lane with alternating directions controlled by flaggers or temporary signals; drivers should expect delays up to ten minutes and reduced speed limits of 40 miles per hour within the work zone.
According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation works to improve quality of life for residents through integrated transportation solutions and oversees transportation infrastructure across the state. The department also delivers multi-modal systems that move people, goods, and information while considering environmental standards. According to the same source, Shoshana Lew serves as executive director.
The department builds and maintains interstates, U.S., and state highways while supporting aviation and transit programs, according to its official website. Its focus includes highway maintenance alongside support for other modes of transport such as aviation. As per its official website, it administers grants related both sectors.
