Wes Parham, a member of the Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation’s (DMCLF) Leadership Fellows Class of 2022, recently shared insights on his experiences in leadership and professional growth.

Reflecting on a pivotal moment early in his career, Parham described how receiving direct feedback about his public speaking skills led to significant personal development. He recounted that a leader not only recommended joining a Toastmasters group but also participated alongside him for several months. This experience transformed public speaking from a weakness into a strength and opened new career opportunities for Parham. He noted that having the right tools to lead during uncertain times has been crucial: “Someone else’s willingness to share honest feedback was a true catalyst for my career path and opened doors I never knew existed.”

Discussing how the DMCLF program influenced his approach to leadership, Parham emphasized the importance of integrating personal and professional growth. He said, “Leadership Fellows was a game-changer for beginning to blend those two worlds. I’m fortunate to have had mentors and leaders who not only introduced me to Leadership Fellows but were just as invested in my growth as they were in their own.” He added that building trust with peers in the cohort helped create a professional network that he expects will support him throughout his career.

Parham also addressed the importance of self-awareness among leaders. He advised investing time in understanding both strengths and weaknesses rather than attempting to excel at everything. According to Parham, “We spend so much time early in our careers trying to be all things to all people. It’s an exhausting approach that often leaves us frustrated and feeling like we’re not progressing.” He suggested focusing on areas where individuals are strong while complementing weaknesses by working with others whose abilities differ.

On the future of civic and business leadership in Denver, Parham expressed optimism grounded in ongoing community investment through organizations like the Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation. Citing advice from one of his mentors—who has served on executive teams at multiple Fortune 500 companies—he stated, “That simple, spot-on response validated our community’s investment in the Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation and gives me real hope for the future of our region.”

When asked what advice he would give his younger self, Parham stressed recognizing opportunity and developing foundational skills early. He believes this preparation enables leaders to take advantage of emerging possibilities: “Like any investment, the sooner we build those skills — understanding who we are, the value of time, engaging mentors, networking, communication, leadership development, how others respond to us, etc. — the more opportunities we’ll recognize and be prepared to take advantage of…”
