Xcel Energy announced on March 9 that it is monitoring and preparing for a higher risk of wildfires across much of Colorado’s Front Range through the remainder of the week. The company said that despite recent snowfall, dry fuels remain, and high winds combined with low snowpack are increasing the likelihood of fast-spreading wildfires.
The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag Warnings and High Wind Warnings across Colorado for Monday, March 9. Xcel Energy stated that wildfire risk is expected to stay elevated throughout the week. The company anticipates using Enhanced Power Safety Settings (EPSS) on Thursday, which make power lines more sensitive and able to stop electricity flow if an object touches them. High winds may also cause unplanned outages.
Xcel Energy uses weather forecasts and other data sources to determine actions needed to protect public safety. The company regularly updates its models based on factors such as high winds, low humidity, and dry ground conditions. Operations are adjusted as needed to reduce wildfire risk.
Customers are encouraged by Xcel Energy to prepare for possible outages due to weather conditions. The company will increase communication if outages become imminent or if wildfire activity rises. Customers who rely on medical equipment powered by electricity are advised to sign up for the Safe for Colorado program or prepare backup power supplies in case of outages.
To stay informed during potential outages, customers should update their contact information in My Account and check outage status on Xcel Energy’s statewide outage map. Building a home emergency kit with essentials like battery-powered radios, flashlights, bottled water, non-perishable food, and backup phone chargers is recommended.
Xcel Energy continues investing in its electric systems to reduce wildfire risks and limit disruptions. Outages can be reported through the mobile app, online at xcelenergy.com/out, by texting OUT to 98936, or by calling 1-800-895-1999.
